Clay Pockets

Denise MacLean’s current practice examines the relationship between human experience and the natural environment. By embedding fragments of the natural landscape into her work, she positions the act of collection and preservation as a form of ecological storytelling.
This design presents a series of hand-formed clay vessels, each crafted with organic shapes and pockets to hold found objects. In the vessel located in the Fredericton Botanic Garden, visitors can place natural objects – such as a special rock, a seed pod, or a flower bloom – into the pockets, inviting them to contribute something from nature that holds personal meaning. There is a similar vessel in Officer’s Square.
